Situation: Two Rivers is the alternative high school in our district which helps students who are off track for graduation. These students are all on different paths for success. Some students may plan to be at Two Rivers for years and others may only be there for a few months. Two Rivers has a structure of mini-terms in which students take classes that are accelerated and offer high school credit in a condensed time. Students will take classes for month-long time periods.
Problem: Students at Two Rivers earn high school credit at an accelerated rate and spend most of their time working toward earning this general credit. As a result, students at Two Rivers miss out on after school clubs and activities that give real life skills and experiences. Also, students frequently do not have a plan beyond a High School diploma.
Goal-Aligned Instructional Strategy: Modeling/Scaffolding/Real World Experience
At Two Rivers, we are working to set up a class that students can take and receive CTE credit. This class will be "hands on" and will teach students about technology and hardware repair. Students will spend one mini-term learning about the G-Suite. They will be on a Google Certification track and will take the Google certification test by the end of the first mini-term. During the second mini-term, students will work on a Level One Tech Certification and travel to the BDO to help the techs work on basic Chromebook troubleshooting and repair. The goal is to have students leave the school with a real-world, transferrable skill and a certification.
Digital Tools: Students will work with all Google applications and they will work with hardware repair in repairing and troubleshooting Chromebooks at a school level and a district level.
