If you have a Kindergartner who has received speech/language therapy services in the past (i.e. early intervention, preschool, private therapy) please reach out and let us know, your student may still be eligible for services through the school district.
Speech Skills by Age 5
Is able to be understood 90-100% of the time.
Says all speech sounds accurately in conversation. May make some mistakes on sounds like /r/, "th," and "zh" (for example: measure)
Language Skills by Age 5
Understands words for order, such as first, next, and last.
Understands words for time, such as yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Follows longer directions, such as "Get the box of crayons, find some paper, and pick out three colors."
Understands most of what is said at home and at school.
Answers "when," "why," and "what" questions.
Understands opposites (hot/cold) and location words (next to, between, in front).
Understands humor and laughs at jokes
Causes for Concern
Has a small vocabulary or only uses short sentences (3-4 words long).
Can't retell an event or simple story (even with help).
Has difficulty following instructions with 2 or more steps.
Has difficulty answering "how," "when," and "why" questions.
Speech is difficult to understand.
Doesn't take turns in conversation or only talks about their own interests.
