Additional types of ELO's include:
Independent practice - Turning outside of school practice through private instruction or classes into high school credit; Group ELO's - For clubs, teams, or groups of students looking to take their learning beyond school walls and benefit the greater community; Micro-ELO - An avenue for students to participate in Job Shadows or Informational Interviewing. At Winnisquam Regional High School we offer many different types of ELO Project Pathways.
All ELO Pathways require a Highly Qualified Teacher in the building to be the ELO Student's Lead Educator. Additionally, all ELO Pathways require, at minimum, the creation of Essential Questions and Learning Goals, a 3-part Final (which includes a presentation of learning), and Weekly Reflections.
Below you can read more thorough explanations of each pathway to discover how they differ, what they entail, and which one may be the right path for you.

Duties can include but are not limited to: assisting in the classroom, technology support, creating & maintaining visual classroom displays, lesson preparation, direct instruction or small group instruction. This experience is an especially valuable one for students interested in a future career in education. A job shadow is required prior to officially starting in the classroom.

Description: Independent Coursework is helpful for students who would like to continue to take a repeatable course but cannot fit the course into their schedule. For example, a student who wishes to continue to write for a school newspaper but is unable to take the course at its scheduled time. Independent Coursework could also be a way for a student to take a deep dive into a subject, event, or time period that they are highly passionate about and create a course of their own with the help of a mentor teacher that is HQT or has professional/dedicated experience in the area of interest.

Description: Career Exploration is an opportunity for a student to investigate and research a specific occupation or a variety of career paths. It also includes independent research and informational interviews with professionals. This experience does not require the a job shadow with a community business partner, but this is encouraged for students in grades 11-12. This ELO does not require a student to work consistently at a work site. It is research based but could lead to a future internship.

Description: Advanced Study is an experience for students who complete a course or series of courses and would like to continue to advance their learning in that subject area when there isn't a scheduled course available. For example, a student who would like to continue beyond Spanish IV or would like to dig deeper into a specific event, time period, or topic of study not being offered as its own class. Advanced Study requires a WRHS Lead Teacher that is HQT in the area of study.

Description: An Internship is a temporary, paid or unpaid working position where a student is paired with a professional in the community (A WRHS professional can serve in this role IF the role is outside of their teaching) in order to gain practical experience in an occupation or profession they are interested in exploring. Description: Pre-Apprenticeships must be registered programs through the Department of Labor. As stated in the ELO Handbook, "An apprenticeship is an employment opportunity that combines on-the-job training and related instruction in which students learn practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation." "Apprenticeships align perfectly with career and technical preparation programs, but depending upon the apprenticeship chosen, other courses' competencies may need to be interwoven to provide core content credit as well as CTE credit." For students interested in Pre- Apprenticeships we highly recommend starting with the U.S. Department of Labor Apprenticeship site or Apprenticeship NH . If there is an apprenticeship you are interested in, that's where we will start!

Description: Individual Practice is a great option for any student who is working with an expert or professional outside of school in an activity or passion-based program. Examples include but are not limited to: Private Instruction - Voice, Instrument; Dance Classes, Personal Training, Group Athletic Training, Ski Racing or Snowboard Team, outside of school Athletics - Seacoast United Soccer, etc. These ELOs require meeting all of the same competencies and expectations as every other ELO, and documentation of experience is especially key.
Grades: 9-12

Mentor/Community Partner: Yes
Description: If a student is participating in a summer experience that they would like to get ELO credit for, they MUST complete and submit all of their ELO paperwork prior to the experience. The student is required to journal weekly during the experience and upon returning home share the journals with the ELO Coordinator. Upon school starting back up the student will be responsible for creating and completing the remaining competencies for the ELO program. Credit will be awarded upon successful completion of the ELO competencies NOT successful completion of the summer experiences, as that alone, is not an ELO. Documentation (photos, videos) and journaling of progress of the experience is key!
Grades: 10-12
Location: On or Off-Site
Mentor/Community Partner: Maybe
Description: Group ELOs are a great way for students to build a deeper connection from a course of study to the greater local or global community. A great example would be a World Language Trip OR a Science Class (or volunteers from a class) partnering with a local business to develop a garden space or conduct a field study. Both of these examples show the bridge between the course of study to community (local or global). Group ELOs are required to have a WRHS Lead Teacher, but may also have a Community Partner or Business that they are working with. All participants in a Group ELO will work towards the same goals, objectives, and competencies but take personalized paths to do. This results in the achievement of the goal or answering of the Essential Questions through a variety of stories and therefore perspectives.

Description: Interested in a career pathway but not ready to dive into a full-time ELO? Micro ELOs are exactly what they sound like - Mini Extended Learning Opportunities! Micro ELOs give students an out-of-the-classroom experience via Job Shadows or Informational Interviews (sometimes only over Zoom or Google Meet) with professionals in the career(s) the student is interested in. All ELO paperwork is required. These mini experiences typically do not result in gained credit, but a follow-up reflection is required by the student. If participating in a Job Shadow, the on-site mentor will evaluate the student's experience. This evaluation can be used for proof of observation hours or as part of a job resume or application. It is common for a Micro ELO to roll into a full ELO.
