3rd grade students learn about inheritance and selection through the Mystery Science and Project Lead the Way curricula. They focus on identifying various traits present in a wide variety of heirloom tomatoes growing at school. At the start of 4th grade these students learn to cross pollinate tomatoes and how to save tomato seeds.
In the spring of 4th grade students plant hybridized tomato seeds, and when they return in the fall of 5th grade they evaluate the hybridized tomato fruit to identify which parent traits are expressed.
