Friday, 3/27: If you like to play games with your family, here's one for you to try this weekend: Pig GameMaterials: dice, pencil and paper.Pig is a game for 2 or more players. Players take turns rolling the die as many times as they like. If a roll is a 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, the player adds that many points to their score for the turn. A player may choose to end their turn at any time and “bank” their points. If a player rolls a 1, they lose all their unbanked points and their turn is over. Play to 50. (Source: mathforlove.org)I will be back Monday morning to post 5 days worth of suggested Math activities for next week. Have a good weekend.Thursday, 3/26: If you have signed up for Khan Academy, I have added a new activity. It is a “quiz” but will not count in PowerSchool! It’s just for you to see your progress on the first 2 topics – Introduction to Ratios and Equivalent Ratios. If you haven’t completed these 2 topics, you might want to do those before doing the quiz. Also, a fun activity to try: Make a hexaflexagon today! Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIVIegSt81k OR this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc0ytliIw_U Then print out a pattern (if you feel you need one – or you can follow the instructions in the video using just a strip of paper). Cut carefully, and be sure your folds are very "crisp": http://vihart.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/hexaflexagon-template-blank.pdfOR, here: https://www.auntannie.com/Geometric/HexaHexaFlexagon/OR, here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/esf1xobbp791jli/trihexaflexagon.pdf?dl=0 Wednesday, 3/25: I am mainly using Khan Academy. If you have already signed up, today’s posting is to try to catch up with the 2 assignments I have already added - Introduction to Ratios (4 activities) and Equivalent Ratios (9 activities). This is review, but I still suggest you watch the instructional videos first, especially if you are scoring less than 100% on the activities that have questions to answer. If you haven’t signed up, parent permission is needed (see earlier letter sent to parents or email me for more information about how to get started). If you sign up, I can see your progress and give you feedback. If you don’t want to sign up, you can still go into Khan through Clever and work on Grade 6 Math in that program, but I won’t be able to see your progress if I haven’t assigned you to one of my Khan classes.I will check my email between 9 AM and 11 AM and again between 1 PM and 3 PM, so please email me if you have any questions or need help with anything. Also, a fun activity to try: “Connect-the-dots” activity: https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/resources/cemc-at-home/2020/english/grades4-5-6/20200324_Gr456_Connect-the-dots.pdfThen, watch a short video about the “Seven Bridges of Konigsberg” problem studied by one of our Mathematicians of the Month (Leonhard Euler) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZwSo4vfw6cTuesday, 3/24: The next assignment has been posted to Khan Academy. (If your parent has not signed you up yet, it’s not too late. Just have them send me an email requesting that you be added and I will send them your username and password.)Here are some other things you can try this week!If you haven’t checked out the Scholastic site for at-home learning during school shutdowns, here is the link for “Week 1” of their middle-school page. https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-6-12.html?magazineName=classroommagazines&promo_code=6294I really liked this article from Day 1: Cozy Camouflage - Amazing outfits that blend in (there's some Math involved!) Monday, 3/23: If you signed up to access Khan Academy as a result of my email to parents last week, you should be able to access your first assignment! Check with your parent to get the username and password I sent to them.
