This is the same information that was sent home the first week of school:
Class Norms
1) Respect each other and try to learn from each other.
2) Try to focus all of your time while in class on learning math.
3) Work hard and take some risks to stretch yourself as a math learner.
4) Have a GROWTH mindset – everyone can learn math if you believe you can and you’re willing to work!
Materials
· A 2-pocket folder (stays in class-holds tests and quizzes; may be signed out at any time for parents to see)
· Agenda book (issued by the school)
· Math Notebook – 1” or 1 ½” binder – for homework and math notes
· Loose-leaf binder paper (at home and in Math Notebook)
· Zippered pencil bag, with the following available every day:
· Sharpened pencil
· Red pen for correcting
· Black dry erase marker (used with personal size classroom whiteboard)
Homework
- A homework sheet with weekly assignments is passed out each Monday and stapled into the agenda book to refer to throughout the week.
- Homework is graded for effort and completeness only, including showing all work. (No work, no credit)
- Each term starts with a homework grade of 100%, but you lose 5 points for any day you do not have a complete homework assignment. “Complete” means attempting every problem in order to get credit. If you have tried a problem and are truly stuck, a parent note will excuse you from losing the points that day.
- If you are ill or have a family emergency, bring a note from a parent explaining the situation so you don’t lose your 5 points that day. The assignment is then due the next day.
Tests and Grading
· Test and quiz dates are announced in advance in the box at the top of the weekly homework sheet.
· Grading categories and percent for each are as follows: quizzes/tests (85%), homework completeness (15%).
- Seek extra help if you do not understand what is going on in class. Extra help is offered Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 7:30 - 8:00 AM. Students must notify me at least one day in advance if they intend to come for extra help and must check in at the office on their way in. There is no extra credit, so take advantage of extra help opportunities if you feel you are falling behind.
- For Term 1 only, any student who earns less than a 70 on a quiz is eligible to take a make-up, after reviewing errors with me (you can earn back half of the points for problems you got wrong). Make an appointment to meet with me before school on a Tuesday or Wednesday to review errors and take the make-up. Make-ups must be completed within two weeks of receiving back the original test or quiz.
- Homework grades cannot be made up; these represent your readiness for class each day, as homework is actively discussed while being corrected. If you do not have your homework at the start of class you lose the 5 points from your homework grade for that day.
