In fifth grade, we spend a lot of time talking about and developing a growth mindset. Just like a muscle, our mindset grows stronger the more we use it. Therefore, we spend time talking about how we can change our thoughts from being “fixed” to thinking of them as “growing!” For example, instead of using a statement such as "I can't do this," we say "I can't do this yet, but I will keep trying!" By developing a growth mindset, students learn to embrace challenges, learn from constructive criticism, give their best effort, believe their intelligence can change by working hard, and strive to achieve goals they have set. Failure is ok, this is how we learn how to persevere and overcome challenges! Visit this great parent website to learn more about growth mindset and to get ideas of how to keep the conversation going at home!
