Math

Topics Covered Include:

  • Place Value (recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left as well as looking for patterns as we multiply and divide by powers of 10)

  • Decimals (read, write and compare decimals to the thousandths, round decimals to a given place value, add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals with standard computations as well as in word problems )

  • Fractions (interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator, add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators with standard computations as well as in word problems)

  • Numeric Expressions (write as well as interpret and solve numeric expressions)

  • Coordinate Planes (graph points on a coordinate plane as well as determine the distance between two points)

  • Volume (use a formula to determine the volume of prisms as well as the combined volume of prisms)

  • Geometry (understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category and use this knowledge to create shape hierarchies)

  • Measurement and Data (convert units within a given measurement system, make a line plot to display fractional units)

Reading

Skills Covered Include:

  • Reading with accuracy and fluency

  • Annotating a text

  • Quoting from a text (both when explaining what the text says explicitly as well as what can be inferred)

  • Summarizing both a fiction and non-fiction text

  • Determining the theme and main idea of a given text

  • Determining how the point of view influences a story as well as analyzing multiple accounts of the same event

  • Using visual and multi-media elements as well as text features to aide our comprehension of the text

  • Comparing and contrasting characters, settings and events within a text

  • Determining the meaning of figurative language

  • Looking at text structure and how this influences a piece

  • Responding to text using the RACE strategy (Restate, Answer, Cite and Explain)

Writing

Skills Covered Include:

  • Narrative Writing (create a personal narrative to develop a story about a time in the student's life as well as create a fictional narrative with a well developed main event as well as an entertaining beginning and an extended ending)

  • Opinion Writing (develop a persuasive writing piece that includes at least 3 ideas supported with evidence and explanations as to why that evidence supports your opinion)

  • Expository Writing (describes a topic of the student's choosing using at least 3 broad yet distinct reasons or main ideas that are supported by details)

  • Grammar (such as conjunctions, prepositions, etc. learned through the use of mentor sentences)

Science

  • Physical Science (matter and it's interactions taught by me)

  • Life Science (life cycles and ecosystems taught by Mrs. Pisano)

  • Space Science (Earth's place in the universe taught by Mrs. Sullivan)

  • Earth Science (Earth's systems as well as human interactions with the Earth taught by Mrs. Austin)

Social Studies

Skills Covered Include:

  • Topic 1. Early colonization and growth of colonies

  • Topic 2. Reasons for revolution, the Revolutionary War, and the formation of government

  • Topic 3. Principles of United States government

  • Topic 4. Growth of the Republic

  • Topic 5. Slavery, the legacy of the Civil War and the struggle for civil rights for all

These concepts are often tied in with reading and writing as well.
