What is MHCB?

Who funds MHCB?

The Mental Health Capacity Building in Schools Initiative is funded by Alberta Health Services, and Alberta Health. MHCB also can receive additional/supplementary funding from other sources.

Who employs the staff of MHCB?

MHCB Staff are employees of their respective school boards and are not employed by Alberta Health Services

Can MHCB staff support other school divisions?

MHCB staff support the schools in the district of which they are employed.

Who does MHCB work with?

MHCB staff work directly with children, and youth, as well as various school staff (e.g., teachers, educational assistants, administrators), and community partners. MHCB does not support the adult or senior population.

What does MHCB do when schools are closed?

MHCB provides programming to students within the school division during the school year, and then will provide community-based programming during the summers and/or school breaks for children, youth and families.

In addition to programming, MHCB staff sit on numerous boards, committees and coalitions to advocate for unmet needs, increased mental health services, and community-focused strategic planning.

Does MHCB provide counselling?

MHCB does not provide any counselling services, and does not support individuals one-on-one. MHCB is a prevention/promotion program that aims to build resiliency in children, youth, and families by promoting positive mental health, coping strategies, and healthy relationships through raising awareness, increasing knowledge, and building skills.

MHCB can provide referrals to public or private counselling if needed.
