As a parent you have a great role to play in your child's learning. You have already made the decision to place your child in a French Immersion program, starting him/her on his/her path to bilingualism.
As parents, you are your child's first teacher. You have instilled values, beliefs, appropriate behaviour and traditions. Your support and appreciation of French language and culture will help develop your child's respect for the subject as well.
You should be up-to-date about how your child is doing in the program and the expectations for your child in the various classes. This year, with Distance Learning, your child will have two teachers with different expectations and ways to communicate. Your child will need guidance on how to adjust to this system.
You can look at the curriculum documents so that you can know what is going to be taught over the school year and what your child will be expected to know. Knowing the expectations can also help you understand how your child is doing in class.
You can support your child's learning by attending parent-teacher interviews (it can be as simple as an email to me or a conversation over the phone), participating in parent workshops and school council activities if available or by encouraging your child to use French in everyday life.
Remember, you don't need to know French to appreciate it and support your child's needs. We are here to help!
