The Importance of Supporting Multi-Lingual Learners
This video emphasizes the important role teachers play in supporting multilingual learners by incorporating specific instructional strategies (e.g. use of gestures, visuals, multi-language anchors, the student’s first language, translanguaging, etc.).
These strategies, which support all students, allow MLLs to more successfully engage with and demonstrate their mathematical strengths.
Multi-lingual learners bring their prior knowledge of concepts and skills, as well as prior understanding about how language “works” to the classroom. Educators thoughtfully plan to use these areas of strength to support students as they develop their English language skills and deepen their Mathematical understanding.
The Lesson Planning for MLLs document provides a framework for educators to consider as they adapt learning experiences to effectively support multi-lingual learners in their classrooms.
Some guiding questions can help teachers think through this process:
What is the student’s STEP level in Oral, Reading and Writing? What are they able to do?
What do I know about this student’s prior knowledge and experience?
How can I use L1 (the student’s first language) to support and engage this student?
What vocabulary will they need to engage in this learning?
What strategies and scaffolding will support this student?
