Purpose of Resource
The purpose of this resource is to help students (and educators) develop a deep understanding of:
unit fractions - the base of all fraction learning
key ideas to unlocking deeper fraction understanding (the 8 Core Concepts)
The resource includes practical assessment tasks and student learning tasks to support classroom instruction.
Assessment tasks and instructional tasks are organized around 8 Core Concepts of fractions, as shown below:
The 8 Core Concepts are broadly divided into two key ideas:
Core Concepts 1-4 develop a foundational understanding of unit fractions
Core Concepts 5-8 help students understand how to apply an understanding of unit fractions to rename, compare, and add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.
How to Use This Resource
Chapters 1 through 3 provide background information for educators on the importance of unit fractions and key models and tools to support student thinking
Chapters 4 through 8 unpack each Core Concept, providing assessment questions, scoring rubrics with student work examples, and instructional tasks to support student learning (as shown in the example below)
Two main ways to use this resource:
Start by using the assessment questions to gather diagnostic data to help you decide where to focus your energies - Which core concepts will only require a light touch, and which concepts may require a deeper focus to guide instruction.
OR
You may decide to jump directly into the tasks that are aligned with each of the eight core concepts. It is recommended to start in Core Concept 1 (Estimating Proportions) and work through the eight core concepts in order, since they form an intentional sequence or progression. You might still use the assessment questions to gather formative data (practice questions or exit tickets), or even summative data if it fits your assessment goals.

Assessment Questions
Each Core Concept section contains assessment questions to help you gather formative insights about your students' knowledge, skills, and understanding related to fractions:
Classroom Tasks
Each Core Concept chapter also includes two or more field-tested classroom tasks that can be used to deepen student understanding:
