The start of second term is a time when we look back at our successes and look forward to the remaining months of the school year. It is also a time when we can make adjustments to the timelines of the Long Range Plans, to best meet the needs of our students. Below, a simple process is described to support your thinking as you review the year and make plans for Term 2.
Review the Essential Key Concepts identified for your division. These concepts and skills are revisited across the school year, and throughout the topics of the WRDSB LRP.
Look back across the topics you have addressed with your students this year (see the year overview page for your grade in the LRP).
What are some of the mathematical strengths you have noticed in your students?
What concepts or skills might your students benefit from revisiting or reviewing?
Where might these ideas be integrated into upcoming topics in the LRP?
Look ahead to the rest of the LRP topics for the remaining part of the year.
What topics still need to be addressed?
Consider prioritizing these through the lens of the essential key concepts (e.g. during Measurement - students can practice representing and comparing numbers as they complete measurement tasks, students can engage with operational sense when calculating perimeter, students can explore patterns inherent in the metric system).
What efficiencies might you consider (e.g. consider blending topics, making strategic use of Tier 2 instruction to revisit and consolidate, adjusting timelines for certain topics in Term 2)?
Consider mapping out the rest of the school year using a graphic organizer. You might highlight weeks using colours and note the topics, or use sticky notes to map out the remaining topics over the year on a blank sheet.
