B1 demonstrate an understanding of numbers and make connections to the ways numbers are used
By building numbers with different manipulatives students practice composing and decomposing
Always tie learning and activities back to magnitude and number relationships. Students need to be able to place and describe how big or small a number is in relation to other numbers, especially friendly numbers. For example, 9 is one less than 10 so it is just before 10 on the line. 25 is halfway between 20 and 30 so it is right in the middle of the space between the two numbers. This also means that 25 is 5 more than 20 and 5 less than 30.
Draw intentional links between manipulatives to help students understand numbers, their representations, and tools.
