By building numbers with different manipulatives students practice composing and decomposing
Always tie learning and activities back to magnitude and number relationships. Students need to be able to place and describe how big or small a number is in relation to other numbers, especially friendly numbers. For example, 90 is ten less than 100 so it is a little before 100 on the line. 100 is halfway between 0 and 200 so it is right in the middle of the space between the two numbers. This also means that 250 is 50 more than 200 and 50 less than 300.
Draw intentional links between manipulatives to help students understand numbers, their representations, and tools.
