This week we have been examining many issues that are going to come up in our reading of Stamped. As we read through the text we are going to be focusing on several essential questions. It is important that we document our thinking at the beginning of this learning so we can measure the growth of our understanding as we move through the text. In your reader's notebook, set up a new page with the title "Stamped, Essential Questions". In your notebook respond to the following questions, use the timer to help you focus your response.
Choose one of the following Ted Talks to watch and think about. Each talk relates in some way to the themes we will be looking at in Stamped. Follow the prompts for each talk and make good use of your discussion moves in the discussion section. Be prepared to share your thinking tomorrow.
Yesterday we began our journey into the text Stamped, by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. Today we are going to find out more about who the authors are and what led them to creating this text together.
Begin by going to Jason Reynold's bio and Ibram X. Kendi's bio. Who are the authors? Where did they go to school? What else have they written? Are there any other facts that stand out to you. Jot these thoughts down on your desk with your whiteboard marker.
Watch the following video as a class. Consider the motives for writing this book, what is the author's intention?
Once you have completed the Friday Quiz please complete the end of the week exit ticket and move on to the catch up list on the board.
Take a look at the book choices below and rank your choices on the google form.
Follow the instructions on the document below to develop a theme statement for the text "One Boy's War". Your theme statement will be due Friday.
As good readers we combine images with text to help build our understanding. Your task today is to read some of the text (no spoilers) of One Boy's War and to add to the understanding you had after reading the images yesterday.
Read the text linked below and take jot notes in the space provided. There are prompts at the top of the reading to help you with your jot notes.
2. Once you have completed the reading go back to the Tracking My Thinking page that you worked on yesterday and complete the second section: After reading some of the text.
3. Once you are finished your language for today you can move on to your Geography. Your 3 questions are due today. I have added a doc to the Geography page if you have questions about an assignment please ask them there and I will answer them when I can.
Grade 8s, please complete the I See, I remember, I think, I wonder for the images in the assignment (linked below). Once you have completed the google slides with the images, use what you have inferred (I think) to develop a single statement (1-2 sentences) that summarizes what you think the main idea of the narrative is.
Check the geography page for a Q and A doc for your summary assignment. If you have questions about this please ask them there and I will get back to you when I can.
Grade 8s you have a few tasks today please complete them IN ORDER. When I am back we will check in regarding the due date for your podcast/infographic as I am not there to answer questions today. Your three questions are still due Friday.
Read the article A Thirsty World and complete the Google Form. Think about how this may relate to your sustainability challenge for Geography.
2. Once you have completed the reading and form above you have time to complete your three questions for your Unit Challenge. Remember, you will have multiple opportunities to be assessed on this part of your assignment so focus on getting it done so that you can receive feedback.
