MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports. It’s a framework schools use to give targeted support to all students. For struggling students, it is an opportunity to intervene early so students can catch up with their peers. It is a proactive model as opposed to the "wait to fail model". Through this model, all students are assessed and monitored regularly to ensure their needs are being met and no student "falls through the cracks".
MTSS includes 3 tiers of instruction.
Tier I: The general curriculum delivered by the classroom teacher is called Tier I instruction.
Tier II: If a student is identified as needing intervention based on the screening data, they will receive targeted Tier II intervention in addition to Tier I. This intervention is typically provided by a Reading or Math Interventionist.
Tier III: If Tier II intervention isn't closing the gap, a student may receive intensive Tier III intervention, which is more frequent and usually 1:1.
