Jacob's intellectual lineage is connected with his time at the School for Designing a Society since 2005, where he was influenced strongly by Herbert and Marianne Brün, Heinz von Foerster, Ernst von Glasersfeld, Ricardo Uribe, Susan Parenti, Mark Enslin, Danielle Chynoweth, Jeff Glassman, Lisa Fay, Rob Scott, Elizabeth Adams, and others. The utopian orientation of School for Designing a Society squares with Jacob's attitude towards microtonality and alternative pitch systems: in the same way that we may find ourselves growing up in a world/society that we decidedly do NOT abide, deciding to act in the absence of pleasant alternatives to create and populate more desirable alternative ways of living...so, too, in terms of the creation of satisfying musical compositions and performances.
Having learned of the word "microtonal" in 2003, Jacob searched for music that was both microtonal and desirable to him personally. Finding (and perhaps prematurely determining) a dearth of the latter, he endeavored to take the microtonal "plunge" and make as much of his music as microtonal as possible from that moment on. His compositional output is eclectic and includes chamber music; orchestra and concert band music; electroacoustic music; music for himself as a solo performer; game or party pieces; and rounds.
Jacob's most prominent instrumental work has been with the Udderbot, a novel family of slide woodwinds based on replacing the base of a glass bottle with a rubber glove. He has offered workshops in Udderbot making; incorporated the Udderbot into various musics; commissioned and performed new work featuring the Udderbot; and is currently at work on prototyping for commercialization and/or mass production. Hear a concert of Udderbot music at The Internet Archive . The Udderbot has always been a collaborative endeavor, so please get in touch if you feel called to help out this fledgling instrument project!

Jacob has served on the board of UnTwelve, with whom he has organized a series of summer camps for exploring microtonality. The curricula that have evolved from these activities are fundamentally based in singing in Harmonic Series (as well as equal tempered xenharmonic) tunings; learning the math of Just Intonation by singing in ratios; and employing comma pumps to endow microtonal intervals with musical significance.
Jacob's first publication under his WET GLOVE PRESS is The Sagittal Songbook, a compilation of microtonal vocal songs and exercises which complement the summer camp curriculum. A second edition with more songs and further in-depth explanation is planned.
