An important book for the serious xenharmonic musician.
Reviewed in Canada on December 10, 2024
A nicely made book full of practical harmonic series music and theory from one of its greatest practitioners; it is an essential addition to the library of any xenharmonic musician interested in gaining a deeper understanding of their art.
This book provides a foundation for understanding and practically using Just Intonation in music. Just Intonation allows for precise control of consonance and dissonance, the ability to express subtle moods, and provides resonant qualities that are unequalled with conventional tuning.
The Natural Harmonic Series is shown to be the source of all musical scales and chords and the simplest approach to understanding and mastery of music theory, a subject which has been a source of confusion historically, for lack of this context.
While this book is technical in nature, it is presented in a clear, logical and comprehensible manner. No previous experience with Just Intonation is required of the reader, though a general familiarity with musical terms and concepts and the ability to do basic arithmetic is assumed.
This 2nd Edition includes photos of 20th century microtonalists and their instruments, as well as many new charts, diagrams and scores.
The music in the album, PRMJI (available at www.worldharmonyproject.com) illustrates the principles and concepts described in the text.
