Anup Biswas - Give Them Music

Give Them Music Benefit Concert to help Mathieson Music School (Archived, 2018)

Worcester, MA: While their classmates are dreaming of prom and graduation, the members of the Burncoat High School Quadrivium Chorus are busy preparing for a benefit concert on March 8th. Unlike most high school fundraisers, though, this is not to raise money for a trip or new performance clothing, this concert will benefit some of the most vulnerable students on the planet; the students of the Mathieson Music School in Kolkata, India.

Founded in 1994 by renowned cellist, Anup Biswas, the Mathieson Music School provides education and possibilities for children who are born into crushing poverty and a social structure that is designed to limit their dreams. The school offers the children education in Music, English, Culinary Arts, Math and Science and a possibility of a successful future.

Mr Biswas visited Burncoat High School last year and presented a Master Class in Music Performance to the students in the middle and high school Music classes. He also told them stories of his childhood in India. How he was given a future through the kindness of an Anglican priest, Father Mathieson, who saw his potential, provided him with an education and helped him to eventually study at The Royal Academy of Music in London. Then he told them about the children at his school. “All a child needs to attend the school is to have nothing. No money. No home. Nothing.” The students were so inspired by his example that they are attempting to raise $5,000.00 toward the education of the children at the school.

The concert, which is titled “Give them Music” after the evening’s finale song written by Jerry Noble of Smith College, will take place at 7:00pm on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Salem Covenant Church at 215 East Mountain St in Worcester and will feature performances by the Burncoat Middle School and Burncoat High School Bands, Orchestras, String Orchestras, the BMS Chorus and the BHS Quadrivium Chorus as well as the South high School Clarinet Trio. The evening will be hosted by John DiPietro of WTAG Radio, and will feature presentations by special guests Maureen Binienda, Superintendent of The Worcester Public Schools, Massachusetts State Representative Jim O’Day, Joseph Petty, Mayor of The City of Worcester and Jerry Noble. Concert goers are asked to make a goodwill offering to The Mathieson Music School. Donations towards the cause can be sent to Burncoat High School at 179 Burncoat St, Worcester, MA 01606 (attn.: Dave Twiss). Checks should be made payable to ‘Friends of The Mathieson School.’
