James is a graduate of a biotechnology program from Centerville High School in southwest Ohio. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from Kent State University in 2012. After graduating, he worked as a research assistant/ lab manager in a molecular genetics lab at Ohio State University. He found his passion of teaching in this position where he was training undergraduate and graduate students in the lab.

James is married and has a dog named Dudley. He and his wife enjoy traveling, hiking and volunteering at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
