“My favourite subject is English because the lessons are interesting and I love reading books!"
Harvey, Year 8
Driven by our ethos and school values, our English curriculum enables our pupils to realise their full potential. We have very high expectations for every student, with challenging and aspirational objectives in all units of work.
Reading is at the core of our curriculum and our aim is to encourage young minds to engage with a wide range of authors, genres and experiences of literature in its rich variety. We aim to develop a love of reading, not just in English but across all subjects, so that our students become readers for life.
In addition to this, pupils are taught the grammatical and structural knowledge to enable them to express themselves clearly and write for a range of purposes and audiences.
Our aim is for students to develop the reading, writing, spelling, speaking and listening skills required for them to be successful in their next steps in education, as well as to provide them with the tools they will need as responsible citizens ready for a prosperous future.
“I enjoy English because I love writing and studying the wider aspects of literacy, everything we learn is important...”
Milla, Year 8
In addition to texts completed in school, pupils have access to thousands of texts online through myON and from our newly revamped library.
We use the Accelerated Reader programme in school which allows pupils to select books at an appropriate level and shows pupils the progress they are making with their reading.
