Unit 3: Polynomial Lessons
L1: Like Terms and Adding/Subtracting Polynomials
We will add/subtract like terms to simplify polynomial expressions.
Like Terms have the same variable(s) and the same exponents.
We will multiply/distribute by positive or negative one as necessary.
L2: Multiply Polynomials by a Monomial
We will use the Distributive Property to expand polynomial expressions.
Multiply Coefficient by Coefficient, Multiply Variables by Variables.
For more complicated questions, we will multiply then we will combine like terms when possible.
L3: Multiply Binomials
We will use the Distributive Property to multiply two binomial expressions.
L4: Divide Polynomials by Monomials
We will take each term in the polynomial and divide by the monomial; divide coefficient, divide variables (laws of exponents).
Lesson 1 - 4 Review
L5: Greatest Common Factor
Similar skills to dividing by a Monomial except we need to determine what we are factoring (dividing).
L6: Factor Trinomials (when 1x^2)
We use our multiplying and adding skills to find factors of trinomials, when leading coefficient is 1.
Find the factors (two numbers that multiply to equal) the constant term
Use the pair of factors (with appropriate + and/or - signs) to add to the middle term
If the Polynomial has a common factor, we take the GCF of the trinomial first.
L7: Factor Trinomials (when ax^2)
We use our multiplying and adding skills to find factors of trinomials, when leading coefficient is a whole number other than one.
We will use DECOMPOSITION METHOD.
Find the factors (two numbers that multiply to equal) the PRODUCT of "a" and "c" [leading coefficent and the constant term]
Use the pair of factors (with appropriate + and/or - signs) to add to the middle term
If the Polynomial has a common factor, we take the GCF of the trinomial first.
