LET'S GET THE FACTS!
Most of the Ancient Egyptians could not read or write. Only priests and scribes used a system of writing called hieroglyphics to record information about religion and government. Hieroglyphic writing first began around 5000 years ago and consisted of about 600 symbols. The word “hieroglyphics” means “sacred writing”. The Ancient Egyptians believed this sacred writing conveyed the words of the gods and helped to preserve the memory of the deceased. Egyptians wrote in hieroglyphs up to about 400 AD. After that time period, people began writing in a short-hand cursive style called demotic. Over time, people forgot how to read and write hieroglyphs. In 1799, a large black stone with three different types of writing on it was discovered by a french soldier. It was called the Rosetta Stone, after the area where it was found. The stone had engraved the same message in three different languages. Because the message was written during the time when the Greeks ruled Egypt, one of the three languages was Greek. The other two were demotic and hieroglyphic. The discovery of the Rosetta Stone allowed us to decipher hieroglyphics and unlocked the mysteries of the Ancient Egyptian civilization.
1) Type your name into the generator websitehttps://www.penn.museum/cgi/hieroglyphsreal.php and draw on a piece of paper your name in hieroglyphics. Make sure your letters go vertically (up and down).
2) Round all corners of paper and then glue it to the center of a thick orange or brown construction paper.
3) Shape the orange/ brown construction paper in the shape of a cartouche.
4) Make a thick line of glue around the outer edge the of the cartouche. Glue a string of brown yarn around it.
5) Loop 2 small pieces in the middle of a popsicle stick.
6) Glue the stick to the bottom
Cut a large piece of cardboard out of a large packing box in the shape of the Rosetta Stone. Paint it black and then add a thin layer of silver paint. Allow it to dry. Then use black markers to make little scribble marks across the top third. Then skip a space and do it again for the middle, and the bottom third (Try to make them all look different). Build a display case for your stone with a large cardboard box upside down. Cut a slit in the center, mount the stone in the slit and secure it with tape. Don't forget to make a plaque for your display.
