We partnered with the The Clay Studio in Philadelphia to learn how to make objects with clay. They sent their Claymobile for an 8-week residency with the 9-12 and Middle School class. We learned about different techniques like scratching and wetting, coil building, and slab-building over a mold. We learned how to decorate with stamps and imprints, marbling clay, and underglazes and glazes.
After the residency, we continued working on making bowls in art class and throughout the school week. This was a lot of work! We would spend some making bowls from scratch, smoothing the bowls, decorating them, and packing them up to be fired in a kiln. Even some of the teachers come too, if they have time.
Thank you to the Kindergarteners for helping make a bowl for the event! The Middle School students joined Kindergarten art class to teach them how to make clay bowls using the pinch pot method.
