Welcome to our fifth grade social studies page. In social studies, the students have an opportunity to learn about a lot of different topics, while tying most of them back to events in our nation's history. The format of our class is a little different than a traditional classroom. We don't take a ton of notes, and don't really have any homework. The students in the class are encouraged to immerse themselves in the open, free-flowing conversations we have regarding the different topics we cover. They also have many opportunities to produce projects where they guide themselves and have a lot of freedom of choice in what they do. This allows them to have all of their questions answered (which they always have a lot) and to tie the learning into things they experience in their own lives. It also gives them the opportunity to make a lot of their own choices and have freedom, which fifth graders love. By having our class like this, it makes the content more meaningful to each and every student. It also makes it more fun for the students, and their teacher too.
Below is a link to our proficiency scales so you can look into what social studies standards we are covering, what we will be learning about, and how the students will be demonstrating their learning to me.
