There are three tools of evaluation for this particular intervention. These tools include:
Demonstrating exercises during the duration of the intervention using a tally sheet
Sharing out our lived experiences as a community during the intervention
Post-Intervention survey
Each of these evaluation tools are essential to the success of the intervention. The idea behind the assessment plan is to confirm that each learning outcome has been met.
In order to properly assess this program I will need to answer the following questions:
How often transfer students are using the recreation center ?
What physical wellness resources are students aware of?
How can transfer students incorporate physical wellness into their daily life?
Do the students who attended the intervention have an understanding of the new exercises that were taught?
I believe it is important to know what existing data is available to have a better understanding of how to analyze the answers to my questions listed above. I will contact the following offices to find out more information:
Current Transfer Student Enrollment & Retention - Admissions
Transfer Student use of Recreation Center Pre-intervention - Campus Recreation
Proactive use of Wellness Resources by Transfer Students - SDSC
I also know that hearing from transfer students who attend the intervention during the introduction and recap portion will give me more evidence that will answer the questions I asked above. This idea is similar to an unstructured pre and post-assessment allowing students to opt in to sharing their experiences.
It is my hope to learn how we can better create a community and promote physical wellness for current and incoming transfer students here at Western Illinois University.
Assessment is different from research because research is what is done before the intervention. After research, I realized the gap between transfer year students experience and their lack of support. Assessing this intervention will allow our institution to have a better idea of how programming for this community and promoting physical wellness is essential for the development of transfer students. It will allow us to know what we need to improve on and what was successful.
Hennings & Roberts (2016) said this about the importance of assessment, "a commitment among student affairs professionals to use hard data to show how the programs they offer, the processes they implement, and the services they provide are effective and contribute significantly to an institutions ability to reach its stated goals and fulfill its mission"
In order to successfully fulfill our obligation to our students we as practitioners must continue to do research on what barriers are students are facing, provide interventions similar to this one, and then assess whether our intentions met our impact. To me, that is the biggest difference between research and assessment.
It is important to understand that there are many stigmas surrounding physical wellness. Students are coming to our institution and intervention with many different lived experiences. I can expect the following concerns as I plan for my assessment:
Ethics:
A framework used by Hennings & Roberts (2016) explains how ethical principles guide our field's practice. These act as a way for me to plan for my assessment in a more just way. For example, "In assessment, this could meant that all participants are made aware of results and have equal access to any programs or services or other resources that are being accessed" (Hennings & Roberts, 2016). Knowing that this intervention has the possibility to be ablest, it is important to have each of the students who attend know that they have access to all resources mentioned in the space. That is why universal design was taken into consideration during the entire planning process including assessment. Students will leave with access to multiple resources and services based on their individual needs. In the post-survey, students will also be asked their best method of contact so they can receive the results of the assessment.
Political:
When it comes to political concerns, I have come to understand that it is important to, "Collaborate with interested parties on instrument design, background information/literature review, and data dissemination" (Hennings & Roberts, 2016). It was important to me during the planning process to include multiple campus partners in this intervention. I think this is equally as important during the assessment of the intervention because each department will need the data from the assessment in order to make changes in their given functional area.
Students will need to successfully demonstrate at least three of the following exercises. Tally sheets will be marked by the Recreation staff present at the intervention.
Low Impact:
High Impact:
Transfer students in attendance will be asked reflect and share out on the following (Make sure they know that participation is challenge by choice and they do not need to share if they feel uncomfortable):
Name three ways you can integrate physical wellness into your daily life?
Students will be asked to complete the following survey via their smartphone device at the end of the intervention.
