This interventional program is intended to address issues that pre-medical students typically face and will provide practical intervention. The interventional program is anticipated to be sixty (60) minutes long in the form of an academic success workshop and panel discussion with current medical students, recent graduates and practicing physicians.
This page includes all of the materials that are needed to successfully facilitate this interventional workshop; All materials are downloadable and printable.
By participating in the student success workshop, pre-medical students will be able to recall three effective methods of time management.
As a result of participating in the student success workshop, pre-medical students will be able to create a MCAT study schedule.
After participating in the student success workshop, pre-medical students will be able to identify at least four MCAT preparation tools.
Workshop Location
The workshop will be hosted in the Lincoln Room in the University Union at Western Illinois University. This space would be large enough to host at least thirty-five students. The room would be set up lecture style to ensure that students are front facing for the workshop presentation and panel discussion. This set up would also be preferred since students would need to sit at a table to write notes and complete exercises in the notebook throughout the workshop. The workshop would include a Google Slides presentation and a Zoom session for the panel discussion; a laptop, camera and projection screen will be used. The room and associated technology will be set up in a way that all attendees will be able to view and hear without there being barriers like partitions or seating that require attendees to have their backs turned toward the presentation/presenters.
Set up:
The Sandburg Lounge would be set up ahead of time by University Union staff
Connect the laptop to the screen, and pull up necessary components such as the slide show for the workshop presentation and video conferencing meeting for the panel discussion (would need to be set up by the facilitator)
Break Down:
Ensure that the Sandburg Lounge is tidy and left in the state that it was found
Disconnect the laptop and turn off the screen
Publicity
Marketing content for the interventional workshop will be shared both digitally and physically. The workshop will be publicized in the following ways:
University Announcements- Announcements will be sent out to all students, faculty and staff via university announcements. The announcement will include an overview of the interventional program and a flyer.
Email Notification- Advisors that work with pre-medical students will recieve an email with information about the workshop and the flyer.
Leatherneck Link- The flyer and program information would be posted on Leatherneck Link a month before the workshop date to share details with students. The platform disseminates details about student activities and campus involvement.
Digital Flyer on screens around campus- A flyer will be submitted to be displayed on screens around campus, in academic buildings and residence halls, to reach students that identify as pre-medical students or are interested in learning more about student success for pre-medical students.
Physical flyers in the residence halls- Ten (10) flyers will be dropped off at Seal Hall to be distributed in all common areas of university housing buildings.

Level of Difficulty
For Facilitator:
Facilitating this workshop would not be difficult due to all of the needed materials and information being provided. The workshop materials are simple to use, downloadable and printable.
For Panelists:
This workshop would be considerably simple for panelists; they will not be expected to prepare any materials in advance. Panelists will be asked questions by the facilitator, and attendees, and answer based on their personal experiences during the panel discussion.
For Attendees:
The workshop is anticipated to be one that is easy for attendees to follow along and remain engaged. The workbook has activities and resources that would be discussed in the workshop, which gives attendees the opportunity to ask questions for clarification, if needed, and get answers immediately.
Possible Barriers or Complications in Workshop Facilitation:
Technology Glitches - There may be issues with connection cords or the display screen, preventing the information from being projected. Technology glitches may also arise with Zoom or the internet connection during the panel discussion.
Lack of Attendance/Participation- A lack of attendance and participation can be a barrier in facilitating the panel discussion, outside of the predetermined questions that would be prepared by the facilitator. A lack of participation can also impact data collection if attendees do not complete the post-attendance survey and because of this, there may not be sufficient information to produce a credible assessment of the effectiveness of the interventional program.
