"Reframing Perspectives"
We often tell our students to "think outside the box," but what does that truly mean in the context of art and education? Does it mean abandoning all frameworks, all points of reference? I propose a different approach: it's not about escaping the box, but understanding its inherent power and intentionally reshaping it.
Imagine the "box" as your unique artistic lens, the individual way you perceive and interpret the world. It's the very framework through which you create. To discard it entirely would be to lose the essence of your artistic voice. Instead, let's reimagine this "box" as the viewfinder of a camera. It defines the boundaries of your composition, yes, but it doesn't confine your creativity. You can't eliminate the viewfinder, but you can manipulate it. You can shift its angle, zoom in or out, and explore a multitude of perspectives within the same scene.
Just as a photographer reframes a subject to tell a new story, we, as artists and educators, can learn to reframe our thinking. Our individual perspectives – our "boxes" – are not constraints, but rather essential tools for exploration and discovery. The true art of reframing lies in consciously choosing where to position that viewfinder, how to adjust our lens to reveal new possibilities, and ultimately, deepen our understanding of both the world around us and the art we create.
"Reframing Perspectives" aims to create transformative opportunities for our students and community by exploring diverse voices, challenging artistic conventions, using art for social change, shifting audience perceptions, and embracing technology.
