ROLE OF A WEHS COUNSELOR:
The Weslaco East High School Counseling Team shares the role of the counselor with staff, students, and parents through ongoing communication, collaboration, and campus visibility. Counselors present at faculty meetings, lead advisory lessons, and provide newsletters that highlight academic, SEL, and CCMR (College, Career, & Military Readiness) initiatives. By partnering with teachers and families, they ensure that everyone understands the counselor’s role in supporting student success. Through classroom guidance, family engagement, and community partnerships, the counseling team promotes a shared commitment to fostering Wildcats’ academic achievement, emotional well-being, and postsecondary readiness.

LEADERSHIP & ADVOCACY:
At Weslaco East High School, the counseling team demonstrates leadership by collaborating with administrators, staff, and community organizations to support students’ academic, personal, and social-emotional growth. As advocates, they promote equitable access to counseling services and resources, providing guidance in areas such as Youth Mental Health First Aid, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Gifted and Talented (GT) services, and College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR). Counselors lead initiatives like the Counseling Advisory Council (CAC), using stakeholder feedback to strengthen programs and address student needs, fostering a campus culture of inclusivity, achievement, and well-being for all Wildcats.

OUR "MEET THE COUNSELOR" APPROACH
Advisory Lesson: At Weslaco East High School, students are introduced to their counseling team through a “Meet the Counselor” advisory lesson implemented on the first Wednesday of the school year. This interactive lesson helps students learn who their counselors are, how to request support, and where to find resources such as academic planning, CCMR information, and social-emotional services. The activity builds early connections and ensures all Wildcats know how to access their counselor from day one.
