Service provider: African Conservation Experience
"The week was incredible from start to finish... everything fitted together to create this incredibly complex story of South Africa, that went far beyond simple conservation. The activities were diverse, but they all told part of a larger story that blended in everything from the history of apartheid to cultural beliefs about witchcraft and their links with conservation. The visit to the school helped the students to understand the bigger picture of what was going on with the people there, politically, socially and economically. To truly understand how conservation efforts worked or, in some cases, didn't work, it was essential to understand how it was all connected, and this is what they [the provider] managed to do so superbly."

West Island School has a longstanding relationship with the MRV Project and it proves to be an extremely popular Horizons Week trip year on year. Based 4 hours drive north of Chiang Mai, in the golden triangle, the students will participate in ongoing service projects that benefit the community. The nature of the service will vary depending on the needs of the local community at that time but students should expect to do some manual labour such as making bricks and mixing cement and working with local children. Students who participate in this trip will need to be mature and sensitive as the direct service involves interacting with the locals. The itinerary also includes various team building and physical activities such as kayaking, hiking and raft building.
There is an opportunity for 4 post-16 students to work specifically at Thomas House during the trip. Thomas House is MRV's special needs centre supporting vulnerable young people in the community. Visit the website to see the impact of our ongoing partnership with Thomas House and MRV over the years.
Students who attend this trip will need to be committed to raising money for the service project before they go.
