Center for Refugees

Who they are

Centre for Refugees (part of Christian Action HK) is Hong Kong’s first and only drop-in community centre for asylum seekers and refugees, providing life changing services for people who are often fleeing war, violence and persecution, who deeply deserve care, recognition, safety and a big welcoming smile.

There are approximately 13,000 asylum seekers in Hong Kong surviving on subsistence level Government welfare for housing, food and transport, with no rights to either volunteer or work.

What we do

Jeff Andrews, the director of the Center, has worked with our Year 7 students about the causes and long term impacts of systemic discrimination to marginalised communities.

At Christmas the WIS community donated gift cards, financial aid and food donations to support the Center.

Impact

The donation of gift cards gave people with very few possessions, autonomy and choice an opportunity to make decisions for themselves about what to purchase. This was empowering and dignifying.

Jeff Andrew's visits to school have powerfully educated our students on how they can play a part in the fight against injustice.
