Operation 'Shred It' was an idea devised by students in 2016 as a way to reduce the amount of paper our school sent to recycling, and therefore reducing emissions due to transport etc.
The idea was to shred some of our waste paper and compost it, put it in worm farms and donate it.
We received funding from Fonterra Grass Roots Fund for two large shredders and the project has grown form there.
The eco warrior group whilst shredding one day were coming up with ideas for the shredded paper and one student suggested we burn it. This led to a great teachable moment and the birth of an investigation into paper briquettes and if we could make them.
What followed was a full science investigation into how to create paper briquettes, building a manual press and testing!
