Operation 'Shred It' was an idea devised by students in 2016 as a way to reduce the amount of paper our school sent to recycling, and therefore reducing emissions due to transport etc.

The idea was to shred some of our waste paper and compost it, put it in worm farms and donate it.

We received funding from Fonterra Grass Roots Fund for two large shredders and the project has grown form there.

HOW IT WORKS

• Students collect the paper from all classrooms and offices (this reduces the risk of many students taking waste to the bins and putting it in the wrong place. The collectors are also trained to subtly remind classes of expectations about how we recycle paper at WIS if their classroom paper bin is not looking flash!
• Those expectations are: Paper ONLY, no Card. Keep the paper flat then it can be shredded (not screwed up), Bins near doors or outside on spec days.
• Students bring the wheelie bins to the recycle shed by the staff car park.
• Eco Warriors on a Friday shred for 30 minutes when time allows.

SHREDDING

• 3-4 students MAX
• No more than 40 sheets of flat paper in each shredder at a time.
• Students have two wheelie bins. 1 is used for non shreddables (such as shiny paper) which will be recycled and the other is used for shreddables.
• There is a third wheelie bin for all the shredded paper.
• The shredded paper can be composted and put into worm farms.
• Anton @ Waste solutions often comes and takes a whole wheelie bin at a time to share with other schools/organisations with worm farms.
