Pātaka kai

Our students wanted to create a pātaka kai so our school community could share with our wider and local community. The students followed the Enviroschools inquiry wheel to investigate how we could achieve this, and they set about consulting the school and community.

The feedback was positive so we identified a location and started making the pātaka kai.

It is now in position and the local community give and take food produce.

The Kaupapa

By the entrance of our school next to the whare is a Pataka Kai.

It is a place where, people who have excess food or garden produce, can donate to others who are in need.

Here are some things you as WIS students can do to look after this taonga.

• Only take food from the Pataka if you or your whanau need it. It is based on honesty so you don’t need to ask for permission.
• The kind of food suitable for the Pataka would be tinned or dried foods, and some fruits and vegetables. Our students will clean the pataka out once a week so try to avoid foods that will rot quickly.
• Foods which would NOT be suitable would be foods that you store in a fridge.
• If there is food in cardboard packaging it should go on the top shelf so it doesn’t get wet.
• The pataka is for food only please. (no blankets or clothes)

Day to Day Monitoring

A small student team are in charge of monitoring what is in the pātaka to ensure thereis no rotting food etc.
