Research Databases

START HERE for the basics: 

Encyclopedias are great starting points for digging into more research. It gives you more information than a dictionary, but it's more concise than Wikipedia. 
Infoplease is a treasure trove of information, including from encyclopedias, a dictionary, an atlas, and even several almanacs.
Britannica is an encyclopedia filled with short articles on a variety of topics.

Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. 
Refseek.com is a search engine designed for students and researchers that includes references from encyclopedias, news articles, academic journals, and more. 
The DigitalMaine Library (used to be "MARVEL") provides every resident of Maine with access to online resources that include a collection of full text articles and abstracts from magazines, newspapers, journals and reference.

Artstor’s ever-growing Public Collections offer approximately 1.3 million freely accessible images, videos, documents, and audio files from library special collections, faculty research, and institutional history materials. Anyone may view and download these collections; no subscription or login required.

The Environment

GreenFILE is a free research database covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more.
