As a result of my study of communication, I am now more aware of multiple ethical issues, such as discrimination, human rights, deception, etc. An especially important ethical responsibility is being honest, along with the significance of respecting privacy. Audiences depend on communicators for truthful information, so being honest builds credibility while preventing misinformation from being spread. Audiences also have a right to privacy, so it is vital that communicators protect this right. This will likely lead to more engagement from viewers and listeners.
Studying communication has also made me more socially aware of issues that affect our community. For example, I now carefully observe how the media covers topics dealing with race, mental health, the environment, LGBTQ+ identities, poverty, and social inequality. I am more aware of the framing of stories and how it can either promote understanding or fortify damaging stereotypes and biases. This realization has propelled me to think conscientiously about the information I share and engage with and to be aware of my role and how I can encourage honest communication.
In the future, I will become more civically engaged by utilizing my communication skills to advance inclusion, stimulate healthy dialogue, and inform audiences accurately. I can do this in many ways, such as through community service, political engagement, and staying digitally engaged. My ethical awareness will allow me to contribute to communities in a meaningful way.
