Our Barrier: Food Insecurity

Food insecurity affects a shocking number of people in the country, even more than homelessness. While over half a million people in the United States experienced or are experiencing homelessness in 2024, more than 44 million struggle to get food for themselves and their families. 13 million of them are children, who go to school not knowing when they will receive their next meal. A variety of things can lead to food insecurity, mostly financial insecurity that can stem from unemployment, rising interest rates and inflation, or just choosing to pay rent (and water and power bills) instead of buy food. Even if someone is housed, they can still struggle with food insecurity whether it's a time issue or a money issue.Â
