U.S. Coast Guard Academy

About Me

I am Kira Howard from Wilton, Connecticut. I accepted an appointment at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and will be playing lacrosse.

Service academies look for different qualitlies than other colleges. For many academys the admission officers look at grades/class rigor, test scores (essay included), sports (leadership), community service, and extra curicculars (leadership).

Below are my stats:

In high school, I was a three-sport varsity athlete (soccer, lacrosse, and ski racing). I was the president of the Recycling Club, a member of the National Honor Society, and a Link Crew leader. I volunteered as a Ski Patroller and as an EMT. Also I volunteered with Leaps of Faith adaptive skiers and TopSoccer.

I was first team all-fciac for lacrosse. I have been All-State for ski racing since freshman year and have participated in TEAM CT during freshman and junior years. I have been a co-captain for the girl's ski team since junior year aswell as captain of the girls lacrosse team. I also was awarded the FCIAS exemplary student athlete award, the CAS-CIAC Student Athlete award, Service Above Self Rotary Club award, and the Arthur J. Wall Jr. Scholarship Award.

WHY THE COAST GUARD?

I was deciding between West Point and the Coast Guard Academy and I believe that it's the long term mission that matters most. I heard from multiple sources that the best part of the Army is West Point and the best part of the Coast Guard is the career. I want to help as many people as I can. I support the mission of the Coast Guard to protect and would rather have a career that I am passionate about. I am also intrested about my major which is Marine and Environmental Sciences and the direct impact and usfulness it will have on my career. My aspirations after I graduate are either going on the Polar Ice cutter out of Alaska to do research or going to PA school.
