Science of Reading

The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. This research has been conducted over decades, across the world, and is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages.

In agreement with Science of Reading research, there are five main components that are fundamental to reading: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.1

Science of Reading is the converging evidence of what matters and what works in literacy instruction, organized around models that describe how and why.2

The Institute, and our key partner Chiefs for Change, created a database to curate the findings and report cross-sections of data by text, grade-level, and knowledge domain. This resource allows new insights about the knowledge domains and topics that students are exploring in classrooms across the country.
