There are over 5,000 types of Ladybugs according to National Geographic. We are most familiar with the 7 Spotted Ladybird. This is the familar red beetle and has 7 black spots. Unliek the butterfly which has a caterpillar in the larva stage, the ladybug pupa look like an insect with 6 legs. The larva stage is a stage where the pupa builds a shell around itself and changes or metamorphosizes into the ladybug.

Egg
The female ladybug lays 10-50 eggs.
Pupa
The pupa looks like it is wearing armor. It eats and eats.
Larva
The pupa forms a shell around itself and attaches itself to a leaf. 3-12 days later the new ladybug emerges.
