Where are we now? (Mrs. Olson's Homeroom Class)

Attendance-

There is a direct correlation between good attendance and achievement in school. Children need to arrive on time (before 8:10AM) and be in class each day, even on early out days. Please try as much as possible to schedule appointments before or after school. We have 38 weeks of school; if your child misses just one day every other week (19 days), he or she will miss over 10% of the entire school year!

If a child is absent, work can be made up, for every day they miss they get that long to make it up (one day missed means they get one extra day to make it up, two gives them two days to make up, etc.). Remember to call the office and ask that we gather the assignments together for you to pick up. Please give us until 2:00PM to get your homework to the office, otherwise let the office know who we can send the work home with and what class they are in.

Sometimes families take their children out of school for a vacation. When this happens, students are still expected to complete all assignments they’ve missed. Whether a child is ill, on vacation, or at a Mariner’s game, they need to make up the assignment. Unfortunately, when absent, they miss the instruction, discussion, and other valuable in-class learning opportunities that are simply impossible to make up. Students have the same number of days to turn in the work as they were gone, for instance, if the student is gone two days they will have two days upon returning to turn in the work (this ensures time for the student to ask any questions to the teacher before turning in for a grade). If the student does not turn in the work, it will be marked as a 0 in the gradebook until it is turned in. Additional class time is not always avaliable, so doing their assignments at home is the best option. Remember, we continue to move to the next lessons so your child will also have that work to do in class.

If late work from missing class becomes a problem, the teacher can take up to 10% off of each assignment each day it is late. So, that means after 5 days of an assignment being late, 50% would be taken off of the grade if it is turned in on day 6. We hate to do this and try to avoid it, but responsibility is also a key skill we are teaching our fourth graders this year.
