Mariam Almezaiyin is our Social Media Coordinator with WiCyS Australia, and knows all too well the importance of cybersecurity and the potential risks it poses to her generation. WiCyS Australia and La Trobe University partnered in a co-design Human Factors in Cybersecurity workshop, holding a hybrid session with industry and academia. Collaborating, the workshop aimed to define the importance of human factors in cybersecurity and identify the essential knowledge and transferable job-ready skills required and discovering teaching and learning activities and assessment approaches. By bringing together academic and industry thought leaders, the shared objective was to bridge the cyber skills gap and empower the next generation of cybersecurity professionals with industry-relevant insights and practical skills.
Professor Leanne Ngo is a supporter of WiCyS Australia, and together with our affiliate she led this workshop on Human Factors in Cybersecurity. To read her summary of this event, click here:

3. Deep Dive intoCybersecurity and Digital Forensics
Our very own Director of Academia, Dr. Elena Sitnikova, ran an intensive Digital Forensics and cybersecurity workshop as part of their role as Associate Professor at Flinders University. There was 25% female representation among all participants, which is a step in the right direction and promising for women in the industry – last year there was only one female.
Digital Forensics is a high-demand field for skilled professionals and is anticipated to grow rapidly over the next decade. It builds on fundamental cybersecurity knowledge, offering both cybersecurity and digital forensics investigator specialists a significant opportunity to become frontiers in defending our society from cyber-attacks.
On the 25th- 28th of July 2023, Professor Ray Hunt led a Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics workshop at Flinders University at Tonsley organised by Associate Professor Elena Sitnikova for the second time, attracting our students from diverse programs, including computer science and electrical engineering. We also had an exchange student from France as well as some IDS staff members. This innovative and creative way of learning Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity provided unique opportunities for participants to network and helped build valuable relationships.
Ahead of the new Digital Forensics stream topics being introduced at Flinders University’s College of Science and Engineering, this workshop was interactive with real-life, hands-on practicals and addressed risks associated with emerging cybersecurity threats, plus the challenges facing investigators to uncover digital evidence. The sessions demonstrated CSE’s new and interactive labs, including Critical Infrastructure Protection, application forensics on TCP/IP, Voice over IP, and Video attacks, exploits and forensics analysis, Internet of Things (IN)security and forensics on smart home applications, automation and controls of critical infrastructure SCADA systems.
