Building Bridges

There are many students from the Wayne Highlands Middle School who are involved in the Building Bridges Project. HHS and WHMS students worked with Honesdale Parks and Recreation and our Mayor of Honesdale, Derek Williams.

Mrs. Beisel shared, "Lisa Glover is a member of the Parks and Rec department. A couple years ago she approached me with an idea for a community mural, and after over a year of planning, presenting, getting shut down, and reworking our plan, she finally got approval!"

The approved plan called for a group of young people from local schools to come together to design a mural for the Stourbridge Tunnel, now lovingly referred to as the "T House" tunnel (due to it's proximity to Treasure House). Students were invited to be part of the design team by community members and their art teachers. The WHMS design team consisted of Anna Brown, Ryan Lentz, Lucas Fritz, Sarai Miranda Williscean, Chloe Kelch, Veronica Baker, Cassie Ursich, and Keith Kolhagen. These students devoted every Friday afternoon, for over a month, to working with local leaders, artists, and community members to design a mural that showcased all the amazing things about Honesdale.

The mural is a tribute to Honesdale's past. Highlighting our scenery, nature, historic people and places, and diversity! The other half of the mural shows the students' dreams for the future of our community, in a fun, graffiti inspired way!

Once the design team finished the mural design, it was presented by WHSD students to the Honesdale Council members. And...it got approved! So after years in the making, we are finally preparing to paint.

Mural painting is set to start in June. ALL community members are invited to join the "painting days", and there is even a portion of the mural where artists of all ages can add their own personal designs - so exciting! The final mural will be unveiled in a ceremony that will correspond with our annual Roots & Rhythm Concert.

Here is the finished mural design!
