Orienteering is a fun outdoors activity where participants use a map to navigate themselves to a series of "control points". It develops their map reading and navigation skills whilst immersing them in nature. Their problem solving will be put to the test in planning the best route to visit the control points.
Orienteering can be done in pairs/small groups or individually. Pupils can complete the courses at their own pace and so it's a great way develop fitness as part of a healthy lifestyle. There are also local and national school competitions that pupils can choose to compete in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Orienteering trips will be ran periodically throughout the school year.
Information will be communicated through the weekly Tutor Notices.
Once the relevant trip information has been shared by Tutors, pupils who are interested will need to collect a letter from Mr Lea.
All the trips are to local parks and will run during afternoons (P5-6) and pupils will be back at school by around 4pm unless stated otherwise in the letter.
Pupils will spend approximately 1 to 1.5 hrs completing the orienteering activity.
The school minibus will transport pupils to and from the courses (unless stated otherwise in the letter).
No! Orienteering is open to all fitness levels, pupils can race the courses if they wish or do them at their own pace.Â
Even if they want to enter competitions, being a skilled navigator is just as important as running fast.
