Picasso Tulips

Pablo Picasso was born in Spain and became a very famous artist known for using many different styles in his paintings and sculptures. Today we will create a tulip drawing in the style of cubism, which was created by Picasso and another artist named Georges Braque.

Materials:

Plain paper

Pencil

Ruler

Colored Pencils

  1. Invite your child to draw a tulip, including a stem and two leaves. Remember, tulips are often drawn with three points at the top and a round bottom.Younger children may need some assistance.

  2. Ask your child to use the ruler to draw straight lines across the paper at a variety of angles. You may need to demonstrate how to support the ruler with the non-dominant hand while drawing with the other.

  3. Once the lines are drawn, the flower will look like it is “broken” into many pieces. Ask your child to color each piece of the tulip and each section of the background, trying not to have the same color appear next to itself. You may want to demonstrate how applying lighter/heavier pressure can affect the color. In the example, the gray/black are achieved with the same pencil applying different amounts of pressure, as are the varying shades of blue, green, and purple.

Nature Puzzle

As we enjoy the weather that is warming up each day, let’s make an outside puzzle.

Draw a shape on the driveway or sidewalk with chalk. The only limitation here is your imagination! You can draw a heart, a star, a person, a unicorn, a frog, a Tyrannosaurus Rex!

The size of your puzzle will determine how many stones we need. This will help us practice spatial awareness. Find stones of various sizes and make a pile near your outline.

Fill in your outline to complete your puzzle!

Counting in Nature

Let’s explore outside today with a small pack of number cards. You can make numbers if you do not have any at home. Your numbers can be 1-10 or 11-20 depending on what you are ready to hunt for outside. Once your numbers are complete, bring them with you and lay them outside in a horizontal line (weighing them down with a rock if necessary so the wind will not disturb them). Take a look around your yard or go for a walk with your family and bring objects back that correspond with your number line.

If you have numbers 1-10, you will look for:

Number one - perhaps one seed pod

Number two - perhaps two of the same flower

Number three - perhaps three pine cones

This continues until your number line is complete. What you find will vary depending on where you live and what is either in your yard or what you find on your walk. We always love to see photos of your work!

Extension

There are five common patterns found in nature. See if you can locate them all. You can either draw them or ask if you can take a picture or point out the pattern while a picture is being taken by a parent.

Making a Twig Boat

Materials Needed:

10 small twigs

String/yarn/wire

Paper/fabric

Hole punch

Hot glue gun (parent’s assistance)

Today we are going to gather the needed materials and build our own small twig boat that we can sail on the water! The water may be a lake, a pond, a stream or even our bathtub! Always make sure to ask your parent’s permission before going near water so they know where you are and that you are safe.

Read and Interact: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Eric Carle’s story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is just over 51 years old. Eric Carle was the author of many stories but he was both the author and illustrator of the Very Hungry Caterpillar, He was born in Syracuse NY and at the age of six he moved to Stuttgart, Germany. He was inspired to write many of his books by all of the fox holes, spider webs, animals and bugs he found while exploring the castles in Stuttgart.

Lavarse Las Manos: Wash Your Hands!

"Buenos días ☀️ to you all.

Sing along with your kids. The best way to learn a new language is putting together music and movement to the words you want to learn. If we add repetition and FUN while you perform the action, in particular “to wash your hands” you have it all to get the words stuck to your mind forever. I hope you like it and Enjoy it !

Lyrics:

Cantemos para lavarnos las manos —— lets sing to wash ours hands

Lava (5x) tus manos, por favor ———— wash (5x) your hands, please

Con agua y con jabón ———————-with water and soap
