Elective Course Descriptions & Requirements

Students will be scheduled in either: One year long Elective Class or Two Semester Classes.

SY 2021 - 2022 Grade 6 Elective Courses

TMG1011 AVID - Year Course

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college prep course designed to provide students with skills necessary to be successful in higher level courses with emphasis on inquiry, collaboration, writing, organizational strategies, note taking, and research.

Requirements: Additional application process including an interview. Applicants will be contacted.

FMB0400 Band, Beginning - Year Course

This course uses band instruments to develop a deeper sense of thinking, feeling, and doing music. After exploration of singing and mouthpieces an instrument will be assigned for further study. Topics included are: music reading, develop instrument technique, instrument maintenance, and listening and reflecting on various selections, relating musical moods to real life.

Requirements: Regular practice outside of class is useful to ensure success. This class will perform at an evening concert on campus.

FVB0015 Exploratory Art - 1 Semester Course

This is a one-semester visual arts course providing students with opportunities to create artwork through a wide range of media and techniques. Activities include experiences in art production and art appreciation .

XWG0002 Industrial Arts - 1 Semester Course

This is a one-semester introductory course providing students with opportunities to explore a variety of technology. The skills that they will learn are: measuring with a ruler, time management, planning & designing, and budgeting (cost of materials & labor).

Requirements: 100% on Safety Test and fully covered shoes.

LJH0400 Journalism / Media: News Writing - 1 Semester Course

This is a beginning news writing course designed for students to work collaboratively as a member of the school news staff and to experience the process of getting the story from the event, to print, and then to the reader. Students learn all aspects of publication that include gathering facts, interviewing, composing stories, layout, design, photography, and use of technology tools. Students may discuss issues related to journalism (eg: censorship, ethics, freedom of speech, confidentiality, truth & accuracy).

Requirements: Parent approval of Student Publication / Audio Release and Technology Responsible Use Form (TRUF).

EXS0110 Computer Science - 1 Semester Course

This course will cover the computer science concepts and skills.

Students will have opportunities to apply them in a problem-solving context. Computer science concepts covered may include programming, networking, and/or cybersecurity. Students will have opportunities to learn and apply computational problem-solving skills.

Requirements: Parent approval of Student Publication / Audio Release and Technology Responsible Use Form (TRUF).
