The Art of Being Human

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

There is a certain art that comes with being human, from our posed facades we want others to perceive to our subconscious, minute gestures. As an artist, my responsibility is to recognize the art I see in people living their everyday lives, and in my artwork I strive to recreate the way I see it. This show, The Art of Being Human, encapsulates this perspective from the last four years of my artistic education. It is broken down into two subcategories, Reflections and Observations. In Reflections, all the pieces are self-portraits, arranged in chronological order, and they display the progression of my artistic ability as well as the way I view myself. The second page, Observations, is dedicated to the observations I make of the world around me. They vary in subject greatly, from models in drawing classes to adaptations of existing paintings.

As far as my “style” and “preferred media” goes, I like to believe that my artwork is not constrained by a certain aesthetic that unifies all the pieces. It varies from piece to piece, depending on each subject that I encounter. My work typically depends on the emotions I draw from my subjects, breaching a wide range of styles: detailed and rendered, haphazard and chaotic, expressive and emotional. The media that I use also depend on the subject matter; as you can see from this show that I work in both wet and dry media. Overall, I believe that this show reflects the parts of life that strike me as an artist, and I hope that everyone can find the art in humanity as well.
