New students and staff are to gather and wait between room 20 and room 21. Students will walk in front when called on by the karanga. The kairanga will lead you to be seated. Once there, the children will sit on the mats, while adults will sit on the seat. Please leave the front row for the kaikorero. Remain standing until the opening karakia 'Whakataka te hau'.
The powhiri/whakatau will begin by first welcoming the visitors with a karanga.
This will be followed by the opening karakia by the tangata whenua. Usually we start with a waiata karakia followed by the actual karakia. Once the karakia has been completed then we all sit down.
Tangata Whenua will begin with their first speaker, followed by a waiata. We generally have two speakers. When they have finished, they will allow the manuhiri to respond.
Manuhiri will reply to the tangata whenua. This is done by two students, who will stand to korero. Manuhiri will stand to waiata tautoko each speaker.
After speakers on both sides have completed their speeches, we stand to hariru. The Kaikaranga will walk the children to the taumata to hongi the tangata whenua.
Before the closing karakia, Matua Danny will stand to welcome and introduce our visitors. The visitors and whanau are welcome to share in some refreshments
