Make the letters
Children in Level One are encouraged to write simple sentences with just one idea per sentence. Helping your child to understand the parts of a simple sentence is important. Help your child to isolate a single idea first e.g Today it is sunny. Point out that simple sentences start with a capital letter always and end with punctuation - usually a full stop. Here are some resources to help your child learn simple sentences.
How to writing is a fun way to make writing hands-on at home. Depending on the age and confidence of your child as a writer you can use this resource to encourage your child to write. Look at the exemplar of the Jam Sandwich How To. Talk about the parts of the writing like the list, pictures, words, for some children you may be able to discuss and find the bossy verbs like put, spread, get and place. Most how to pieces of writing have bossy verbs. They will need to use some when they write their own how to. If you have a printer you are welcome to print these templates, but you don't have to - just use a blank page or an old book . Most children need the lines as a guide so you can rule some for them. Help your child hear the sounds in the words and know that it is okay for early writers to get help with their sounding out and recording sounds. At some stage you may even have to take over the writing for them for a period. Just encourage them to do a little more themselves each day.

You can choose from one of these ideas or pick your own idea if you like.
Making booklets all about topics they know a lot about is a great way to engage children in writing. Simply fold together blank paper and staple (if you can, but tying together with string or ribbon or just folding is fine too)
