Joining an a cappella group at Wake Forest might feel overwhelming. Remember: its not just about a group choosing you - it's about you choosing a group, too.

We usually rehearse weekly on Wednesday and Sunday from 7-9pm, though these dates have changed in the past to accomodate a member's schedule. If you have scheduling conflicts, tell us at your audition, and we'll happily consider the possibilities of other dates and times. As with other ensembles, we may add rehearsals to prepare for performances. We have a lot of fun during rehearsals, but we make sure to keep it on time and productive!
Wake Forest can really fill up your schedule, and thats normal! Innuendo is a place for the motivated and busy. Many of Innuendo's members are not only a part of several other groups, but highly successful outside Innuendo. From world-class theater performers (Gavin Swartz '27 and Neve Portnoy '29), outstanding pre-med students (Shaan Mehta '26 and Michelle Ferrone '26), club presidents (Winston Miller '28), and active greek life members - Innuendo is for everyone!

Four of our seven seniors graduated with Wake Forest's highest academic honors: one Cum Laude, one Magna Cum Laude, and two Summa Cum Laude recipients. Congratulations!
Gavin Swartz '27 held a leading role this past spring in the Wake Forest theater production of Jagged Little Pill, playing Nick Healy.
In his last semster, Wilson Todd '26, co-founder and President of Jam for Janey, raised over $200,000 for a memorial scholarship.
Before going abroad in the spring, Andrew Braun '27 served as a managing editor of the WFU newspaper, the Old Gold & Black.
Carson Taylor '26 is one of the reigning 2026 WFU Intramural Co-ed Football Champions.
Winston Miller '28 just passed 200k following on social media platforms for his music content.
There are two rounds - open auditions and then a callback.
OPEN AUDITIONS: 10-15 minutes
Introduction
We know auditions can be stressful, so we take some time at the beginning to break the ice, read your audition information, and get to know you better.
Solo, Verse + Chorus
Then, we will ask you to perform an unaccompanied (or, a cappella) verse + chorus of a song, singing from whatever artist or genre shows you off best.
Innuendo doesn't sing only one genre, so don't feel the pressure to perform a pop song when you're voice sounds best belting musical theater or using your Amy Winehouse rasp. Make it personal!
3. Musical Ability Assessment
We test range, pitch matching, dynamics, and give an optional sight reading test. We always encourage everyone to test their sight reading - it's pretty basic and can only help your audition score.
4. Blending Exercise
We will give you a short excerpt (10-30 measures) from our repertoire. We pair you with someone from your voice part, and we will test your blending capabilities (tone adjustment, listening, basic music reading, musicianship, etc.)
Though this seems daunting, this is very low stress! We go through the excerpt three times in each audition, asking you to sing confidently on your third run.
5. Questions/ Extra 'Get To Know You' Time
One of the reasons we love auditions so much is because singers are so unique. Everyone in Innuendo is distinct from the rest, so tell us what makes you special! No need to come with anything prepared for this part, just be yourself!
CALLBACKS: 15-20 minutes
Callbacks are different for each singer. After we asses your audition, we will email you with the agenda for your next audition. In most cases, callbacks are to address points of unclarity from open audition. Some singers blend with the group but in a different voice part, some solo again but in a different genre, and some we callback just to say hi.
Note: if you didn't receive a callback, you are still eligible to be offered a spot in the group. Conversely, if you receive a callback, that does not guarantee a spot.
That is totally OK! Many singers throughout Innuendo's history haven't come from an a cappella background. As long as you've got the skill and the confidence, there's no shame in faking it till you make it - Innuendo will see you through! We represent singers with all kinds of experience, from choirs, bands, theater groups, and even social media. Don't be afraid to try!
